ANNE DEON - Artist's Bio
Born and raised in NYC, Anne became part of the seminal group of artists to colonize Soho in the late 1970s. After earning her B.F.A at CUNY, she set out to make her mark and participated in many of the group art shows in the budding Soho Art district and in downtown Manhattan. Her paintings were part of the legendary Times Square Show. She exhibited her super 8 films, paintings and performed in The Kitchen, a seminal SOHO gallery, and in Neo Personna Gallery, Project of Living Artists, and more.
Many young artists of the time also went into Art Rock/Punk Rock music playing such fabled venues as Max's Kansas City, CBGB, and other clubs that hosted the NY Art and Music Scene. Deon spent time performing on those stages in her own avant garde art bands, eventually touring Europe with Elektra Recording Act Alan Vega. All during her performing career Anne continued painting and exhibiting in Manhattan
During these years in Manhattan, and later in Los Angeles Deon created three major art series, and they are: Heroes, Outlaws, Angels & Rebels - A Pop Art series using iconic images from American Culture, such as The Statue of Liberty, Muhammad Ali, Monroe, Jesse James & HIs Gang, Amy Winehouse and more. The Ancestor & Ghost series is influence by ancient and primitive art from all cultures, worldwide, spanning millenium. Anne's interest in the manner in which people from the ancient past, and through to the present, represented God and The Spirits visually. Her paintings are beautiful marriage of modern art with ancient and primitive art.
The Abstract works are also a series which was an adventure in pure color, shape and form.
In the early 1990s Deon moved to Los Angeles and became part of the Art Scene in Downtown LA, as well as exhibiting in galleries in Beverly HIlls, Santa Monica, the Wilshire District, West Hollywood, Santa Ana and environs beyond on the West Coast. Her iconic painting of the Statue of Liberty, created in NYC in 1984 was featured on TV and on the cover of the Set Decorator's Society of America Magazine.
After her recent arrival in Ft. Lauderdale Anne Deon quickly established herself here in So. Florida by mounting a retrospecive exhibition at the Coral Springs Musuem of Art (2012). This exhibition featured selections from her three most important series: Heroes, Outlaws, Angeles & Rebels (POP Art) and well as her series: Ancestors & Ghosts, and her Abstract Painting.
